25 teams turned out for the inaugural Ochil’s 8 Relay Race which was more than a pleasantly surprising number for its first year. Teams arrive from as far as Forres and Annan not to mention a great spread from across Central Scotland.

The weather started off wet, with intermittent downpours and occasional slightly damp moments. Cloud capped the hills for the major part of the day, pea soup was definitely on the menu. However, this didn’t deter the athletes as they all competed with gusto and determination.

Each of the 3 routes were challenging, covering some of the steeper slopes of the Ochils and, with the wet conditions and low cloud cover, this made negotiating each of the check points an even more demanding task. Nevertheless, all competitors arrived back safe and sound without any major blips, having survived a few epic bum slides.

The camaraderie among the runners was amazing. Most competitors waited until the last runner came down the hill to shout them on in support for the epic effort they had endured because of the weather.

Apart from a route sabotage on leg 3, (thankfully Gordon from Wee County saved the day and re-routed the course in time to prevent more runners being mislead) the black clouds didn’t dampen the spirits of the athletes and it was lovely to see so many smiling faces (after they had run their race!!). Or maybe it was a smile of relief that they got back!!

A massive thanks to all athletes who competed valiantly, despite poor weather conditions. Further thanks goes to our sponsors for their generous prizes. And most importantly, a tremendous thanks for the support of our marshals and helpers who had to endure many hours of cold crappy weather on the hills of Alva.

All proceeds from the race will go to McMillan Cancer Support and Ochil Mountain Rescue and we are very pleased to say that you all have raised £800 for these worthwhile causes.
